State technology and public safety officials have activated a statewide cybersecurity incident response after a coordinated cyberattack targeted more than thirty community water systems across Minnesota.

The cyber intrusion began late Sunday and continued into Monday, affecting automated operating systems and cellular communications across multiple local water and wastewater utilities.

In Braham, a city about fifty miles north of Minneapolis, attackers disabled computerized controls, forcing the municipal well and water treatment plant offline for nearly two hours on Monday morning before public works crews restored service. Other impacted municipalities—including Plymouth, South St. Paul, and Maple Plain—reported disruptions to automated controls, water tower communications, and wastewater lift stations.

State and local officials confirmed that the cyberattack caused no physical damage to water facilities or infrastructure. Crucially, drinking water quality and safety remained unaffected throughout the incident, and utilities immediately implemented manual workaround procedures to maintain uninterrupted water and wastewater operations.

Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) is collaborating with the Minnesota Department of Health alongside local, federal, and law enforcement agencies to investigate the source of the breach, assess vulnerabilities, and strengthen cybersecurity defenses across critical infrastructure statewide.
