A United States Postal Service letter carrier is facing multiple felony charges after state and federal authorities allege she stole a winning Florida Lottery ticket from the mail and redeemed the prize herself.

Lekaysha Lockhart, 28, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Florida Lottery Division of Security, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation launched after a Florida Lottery player reported that a winning Pick 4 ticket sent through the mail never reached its intended destination. State lottery inspectors traced the missing ticket, which was originally purchased at a 7-Eleven in Tampa, and discovered it had been cashed in on June 19 at the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office.

Investigators identified Lockhart, a mail carrier assigned to the Oakland Park post office, as the person who redeemed the stolen ticket. Authorities noted that Lockhart was not authorized or approved by the owner to possess or claim the winnings. According to law enforcement officials, Lockhart admitted during questioning to taking the ticket from the mail stream and claiming the payout.

Lockhart faces charges including grand theft, dealing in stolen property, filing a false claim for payment, two counts of unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and mail theft. Because the alleged crimes spanned multiple judicial circuits across Florida, prosecutors will try the cases separately.

“Our players deserve confidence that every Lottery prize is protected through strong security measures and diligent oversight,” Florida Lottery Secretary Reginald D. Dixon said in a statement praising the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved.
