Legendary British actor Tim Curry, whose fearless performances, distinctive voice, and theatrical flair made him an enduring pop culture icon across stage and screen, has died at the age of 80.
Curry passed away on Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles, his manager confirmed.
Born in Cheshire, England, in 1946, Curry began his career on the London stage before skyrocketing to international fame in 1975 as the extravagant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What started as a stage musical evolved into cinema’s longest-running midnight movie phenomenon, largely powered by Curry’s defining, unforgettable performance.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Curry established himself as a master of theatrical flamboyance, comedy, and sinister villainy. His standout film and television credits include playing Wadsworth the butler in the 1985 comedy cult classic Clue, terrifying a generation as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, and delivering memorable roles in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Annie, Legend, and Muppet Treasure Island.
A acclaimed stage veteran, Curry earned three Tony Award nominations throughout his career for his performances in Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot.
Curry had faced health challenges following a major stroke in 2012 that restricted his mobility, though he continued to work on voiceover projects and embrace his fans at public appearances in his later years.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the entertainment industry, honoring an actor whose singular talent and iconic roles left an indelible mark on generations of moviegoers.
