King Harald V of Norway, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch who modernised his country’s royal house while serving as a steadfast symbol of national unity for more than three decades, has died at the age of 89.
The Royal Palace in Oslo announced that King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time on Friday, August 28, 2026, surrounded by members of the royal family. He had been hospitalized since mid-August receiving treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood condition, before his health deteriorated significantly.
With his passing, his 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeds to the throne as King Haakon VIII.
A Nation Mourns a Unifying Leader
Flags across the Scandinavian nation were lowered to half-mast as news of the monarch’s death spread. Hundreds of citizens gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to lay flowers and pay tribute to a king widely beloved for his humility, warmth, and progressive vision.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed “deep sorrow” on behalf of the country.
“An entire nation mourns, and at the same time remains profoundly grateful for a long life devoted to Norway,” Støre said in a statement. “King Harald loved Norway. And Norway loved its king.”
A Reign Built on Love and Modernisation
Harald V ascended the throne in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. During his 35-year reign, he guided Norway through an era of vast economic prosperity driven by its offshore oil and gas industry, while steadily bringing the constitutional monarchy into the 21st century.
Even before becoming king, Harald challenged long-standing royal traditions. As a young prince, he spent nine years insisting on marrying his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner. After receiving permission from his father and parliament, their 1968 wedding broke historical precedent and reshaped how European royal families approached marriage.
Throughout his reign, Harald became famous for his inclusive speeches advocating for diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, religious tolerance, and environmental protection. Following the devastating 2011 terror attacks in Norway, he served as the emotional anchor for a grieving public, famously declaring that the response to tragedy must be “more openness, more democracy.”
A Lifelong Oath
Despite experiencing several health issues in recent years—including heart procedures, infections, and receiving a pacemaker—King Harald repeatedly rejected calls to abdicate, maintaining that his oath to the Norwegian parliament was for life.
Transition arrangements are underway as King Haakon VIII assumes his duties. The government is scheduled to convene an extraordinary council meeting shortly to mark the succession and formally greet Norway’s new monarch.
