Trump Administration Directs U.S. Mint to Roll Out New $1 Coins for General Circulation

The U.S. Mint is preparing to issue new one-dollar coins into general circulation following a direct push from the Trump administration.

The initiative aims to increase the everyday use of dollar coins across the country, replacing traditional paper bills with durable metal currency designed to reduce long-term printing costs. Administration officials argue that shifting to coins will save taxpayers millions annually in production and replacement expenses, citing the longer lifespan of metal currency compared to paper notes.

However, previous attempts to popularize dollar coins in the United States have faced significant resistance from the public and retail businesses, which overwhelmingly prefer paper bills. Opponents of the shift point out that vending machines, cash registers, and consumer habits remain firmly geared toward paper currency.

Despite past hurdles, Treasury officials confirm production plans are moving forward, with distribution to commercial banks expected to begin in the coming months.
