German authorities have confirmed that the suspect wanted in connection with Saturday night’s deadly vehicle-ramming and stabbing attack near Berlin’s Pride parade was shot and killed by police during a confrontation on Sunday evening.

The suspect, identified by police as twenty-one-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout, was tracked down around six o’clock in the evening to a garden complex in the western Berlin suburb of Spandau after a search lasting nearly twenty-four hours. According to Berlin police, officers opened fire after Ballout charged toward them while armed with a bladed weapon. He died at the scene despite immediate resuscitation attempts.

The manhunt was launched following an attack in Tiergarten park during the culmination of the annual Christopher Street Day celebrations. Investigators say a white van was driven into a crowd of pedestrians, killing one woman and injuring twenty-nine others. Authorities reported that after the vehicle crashed into a tree, the driver exited and attacked several passersby with a sharp instrument.

German interior officials confirmed that Ballout had a history of involvement with local extremist networks and had previously been convicted by a Berlin court after attempting to join the Islamic State group. Federal prosecutors and local police are continuing to examine evidence collected during Sunday’s investigation to determine the full timeline and circumstances surrounding the attack.
