Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino to Step Down Following Rebrand Backlash

Cracker Barrel Chief Executive Officer Julie Masino is stepping down from her role nearly a year after a controversial rebranding effort sparked widespread customer backlash, slumping sales, and investor pressure.

The restaurant chain announced Monday that Masino will officially step down as CEO and board member on August tenth, remaining in an advisory capacity until October ninth to ensure a smooth transition. David Deno, former chief executive of Bloomin’ Brands, will take over as CEO starting August tenth.

Masino, who joined the company in July 2023, spearheaded a multi-year modernization strategy aimed at attracting younger customers. The transformation plan included lighter restaurant decor, menu updates, and a simplified logo that removed the iconic “Uncle Herschel” imagery.

The changes ignited immediate pushback from loyal customers and public figures, leading the company to reverse course on the logo redesign within days. Despite dropping the rebrand and restoring traditional elements, the company struggled with declining customer traffic and falling quarterly revenue over subsequent months.

In a press statement, Cracker Barrel’s board thanked Masino for her leadership and commitment, noting that Deno brings extensive industry experience from his leadership at Outback Steakhouse’s parent company and executive roles at Best Buy and Yum Brands.
