An Iranian official has fiercely rejected President Donald Trump’s latest social media post, which featured an image of a map labeling the Strait of Hormuz as a “new” U.S. territory.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi responded on X (formerly Twitter), calling the graphic a “delusion” and warning that Tehran would push back against the claim.
“Just as Trump correctly wrote the name of the eternal Persian Gulf, his delusion regarding the Strait of Hormuz will soon either be corrected, or we will correct the delusions of this delusional man,” Gharibabadi wrote in his post on Tuesday.
The exchange follows comments Trump made last week suggesting he intended to declare the critical maritime choke point a U.S. territory “pretty soon.” His social media post on Tuesday, which shared the altered map without additional commentary, marks a sharp rhetorical escalation between Washington and Tehran amid ongoing military standoffs and economic friction in the region.
Nearly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making the waterway a vital nexus for global commerce and international security.
