Fifty percent U.S. tariffs on a range of Canadian imports went into effect early Saturday morning after last-minute trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa fell apart.

The levies hit dozens of products—including agricultural items, dairy, wine, and consumer goods—following the midnight deadline.

The breakdown comes just days after President Donald Trump claimed the two nations had reached a preliminary agreement, prompting a temporary reprieve. However, negotiations collapsed late Friday as both sides traded blame.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Canada declined to finalize the agreement under terms reached earlier in the week, alleging Canadian negotiators introduced “new demands and walk backs of other commitments”.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada was suspending trade talks, calling the late U.S. demand changes “unfair” and “uneconomic”. Carney confirmed Canada would retaliate with matching “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs on U.S. goods.
