A nonpartisan congressional watchdog report reveals that the $110 billion in taxpayer savings claimed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is vastly inflated, unverified, and riddled with accounting errors.

According to an investigation by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the savings listed on DOGE’s online “Wall of Receipts” routinely overstated cost reductions, double-counted routine cancellations, and claimed credit for contract terminations that never actually occurred. Investigators found that over 100 lease cancellations touted as new savings had already been scheduled for elimination before DOGE was created. In other instances, multi-billion-dollar savings were claimed for canceled programs that were either never executed or miscalculated by factors of a thousand.

The GAO criticized DOGE for a severe lack of transparency and failing to provide documentation to back up nearly 96 percent of its claimed grant savings. While advocates of the initiative previously praised the effort to cut government waste, lawmakers and policy experts warn that the deceptive accounting masks broader disruptions to essential federal agencies without delivering the promised financial return.
