Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility where he was recovering following a fall, the Kentucky lawmaker announced Thursday.

McConnell, 84, said in a statement that he will continue an intensive physical therapy regimen from home on the advice of his medical team.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

The veteran senator was admitted to the hospital following a fall on June 14, where he was also treated for pneumonia, before moving into the inpatient rehabilitation facility to regain mobility and strength. McConnell, who survived childhood polio, has previously acknowledged long-standing mobility challenges.

Late last month, his office released an update from the Office of the Attending Physician indicating he was undergo multiple daily physical therapy sessions to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. That recovery process forced him to miss Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm political event in early August.

McConnell added Thursday that he remains fully engaged with staff and Senate colleagues on congressional business during the current state work period as he continues his at-home therapy.
