Emergency management officials in Hawaii are warning residents to prepare for a second consecutive weekend of dangerous weather, as a new tropical system tracks toward the Hawaiian Islands just days after Hurricane Lala caused widespread flooding and power outages.

The U.S. Central Pacific Hurricane Center announced that a developing tropical cyclone is moving west-northwest across the Pacific Ocean. The system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall—with localized totals of up to 15 inches—and strong, gusty winds beginning late Saturday night and continuing into early next week.

The threat comes while thousands of residents on the Big Island are still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Lala, which dumped over 40 inches of rain in parts of the island, tore roofs off structures, and washed away homes and roads. With the ground already heavily saturated, forecasters warned that the incoming storm presents a significant risk of severe flash flooding, mudslides, and additional structural damage.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green and local civil defense agencies urged residents across vulnerable southeastern districts to take action immediately, secure essential supplies, and clear drainage areas before weather conditions deteriorate. Hawaiian Electric crews are also working to stabilize power infrastructure that was crippled by the previous storm before the next round of severe weather hits.
