President Donald Trump announced Sunday that his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery will be converted into a dual-use military complex equipped to store drones, house sniper teams, and hold large quantities of ammunition.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated the modification was made at the “strong request of the United States Military” and for national security purposes. The president claimed the structure—planned for Memorial Circle near the Arlington Memorial Bridge—would allow for the rapid deployment of drones and position snipers on both its roof and surrounding plaza areas.

The proposed 76-meter monument was originally unveiled to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, the project continues to face opposition from preservationists, veterans, and local groups. Critics contend the massive structure disrupts the historic sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, while a federal lawsuit argues the administration lacks the necessary congressional approval to move forward with construction.

The military designation comes as the Federal Aviation Administration recently cleared the structure’s height following safety reviews regarding its proximity to Reagan Washington National Airport. Final regulatory approval from the National Capital Planning Commission remains pending.
